A Taste of The Philippines in London

The 23rd March 2016 saw the official opening of a new Philippines restaurant in London. The occasion was attended by many dignitaries from the Philippines and the UK.

The Romulo family was there in force to celebrate the first branch of the successful Romulo Cafe outside of Manila.

An article in the Philippine Star Business Chic section by Johnny Litton can be seen below. this includes many photos of the opening event.

A taste of Filipino in London – Business Chic by Johnny Litton – Philippine Star 18th April 2016

Johnny Litton writes:-

“Anticipation ran high among the good friends and kababayans over the opening of Romulo’s Cafe’s first branch outside of Manila – a heroic 6,700 miles away in the UK – that the occasion necessitated two launch parties.

Indeed, the Philippines very own Romulo Cafe has a smart new London address on Kensington High Street.

There to offer familial support to the driving force and ex-JP Morgan banker Rowena Romulo and her fellow managing partner Chris Joseph, was the proud father, lawyer Ricardo Romulo who flew in from Manila with his other daughter Sandie Romulo-Squillantini and her husband Enzo Squillantini, and niece Maritina Romulo, who was representing her father Ambassador Roberto Romulo.

A collective undertaking of the globe-trotting, food loving Romulo family, Romulo Cafe London replicates the successful formula of good comfort food and chic ambience of its sister restaurants in Manila, founded by Enzio and Sandie.

All are gastronomic tributes to the life and times of legendary statesman Carlos P. Romulo.

The new Romulo Cafe London has been a truly Filipino undertaking – with the kitchen run by Filipino executive chef Lorenzo Maderas, interiors designed by UST and Chelsea College of Art alumnus, Karen Soriano, and communications by Gina Consing McAdam.

Deputy Chair of DAKS and former ambassador of the UK to the Philippines Paul Dimond said it well: “We are confident that it will transform the image of Philippines style cuisine in London, be a great success and contribute much to the Kensington area as a prime quality destination for British and foreign diners alike. You must be immensely and justifiably proud of your family heritage”

Cheers to the Romulos on this brave and much anticipated adventure!”

How can the sector possibly keep up when it is already stretched to the limit due to mammoth growth plans of current locators AND a crisis in transport infrastructure that is attracting global attention? The addition of so many new locators at once will push the sector over the edge, is the prediction of many.
